If you have ever wondered whether there’s something wrong with your child’s teeth, there’s a chance that there might be. These are some signs to look out for which indicate diseases of teeth or mouth :

● Constant toothache and irritability

If your child complains of toothache you may want to check his/her teeth to see if you can see any decay or black spots on teeth. Older kids can point out which tooth hurts, which may indicate a cavity in their tooth. For younger kids, constant irritability may be a sign of pain in their teeth which is often associated with teething. It is advisable to see a pediatric dentist in such a case as early as possible.

● If your child refuses to eat, ask him/her if they have some discomfort or pain in their teeth. Most often children refuse to eat as chewing causes them pain which they do not recognize otherwise. Needless to say, any dental decay leading to a refusal to eat can affect the nutritional intake and their overall health in turn. Hence, it is vital to seek a professional opinion to figure out the reason behind your child’s behavior.

Try to be reasonable with your child. Ask him/her if there is something troubling them instead of reprimanding them.

● A quick look into their mouth with your torch can give you an idea if your kid has any cavities. Cavities normally appear as black spots that may appear on the surfaces of the back AND front teeth. More often, cavities in kids being very small in size are not detected by parents but cause substantial pain to the child. Food may get stuck into these cavities and cause pain too. Children often develop ulcers in their mouth which cause them serious pain and lead to constant irritability. A quick check-up by a specialist can reveal the cause behind your concerns.

It is advisable to take your tiny human for their first routine check-up to a pediatric dentist by the age of 1 year or as soon as the first tooth erupts.

Do not let your little one suffer due to dental problems, just because you think it’s just a milk tooth. Consult a pediatric dentist as soon as possible.
